Swatches: MAC Holiday '08 pigments, Maybelline Roller Color

MAC Cool pigment set

L-R: Reflects Blackened Red, Cool Frost, Quietly, Pinked Mauve, Teal

Photobucket

Reflects Blackened Red
Hard to swatch properly. It actually has red glitter flashes rather than the brown you see in the picture. I've heard this looks great as a nailpolish!

Cool Frost
Very frosty (lol). Also a bit chunky so doesn't apply smoothly

Quietly
Lilac colour with silver sparkles. Its a warmer purple than Beautiful Iris eyeshadow but cooler than Lovely Lilac pigment. Supposedly an Asia exclusive colour when it was first released.

Pinked Mauve
Warm dark pink. Shimmery with great colour payoff

Teal
Green-blue colour, also shimmery and pigmented. I think just about every MAC fan owns this colour, or at least a sample of it.

MAC Warm pigment set

L-R: Reflects Antique Gold, Gold Dusk, Gold Mode, Melon, Gold Stroke

Photobucket

Reflects Antique Gold
Glitter that reflects gold. The name pretty much summed it up :)

Gold Dusk
Pale gold, slightly frosty

Gold Mode
Champagne gold colour. Definitely my favourite colour of the set.

Melon
Warm peach gold. Shimmery and pigmented

Gold Stroke
Warm chocolate brown with sort of a gold sheen to it.

Here's what they look like in the bottles for comparison's sake, all in the same order as the swatches:

L-R: Make a Move Mauve, On Track Lilac, Steel Wheelin, On the Ball Blue, Skate til Midnight

Make a Move Mauve
My favourite colour of this series. It was my very first makeup item! I got this because I wanted a backup as the first one is running low. Its a shimmery warm mauve that my best friend picked out for me the first time we went makeup shopping :)

On Track Lilac
Lilac colour, a cooler shade when compared with MAC's Quietly pigment.

Steel Wheelin
Silver-grey colour. Its a bit more greyish compared to MAC's Electra eyeshadow.

On the Ball Blue
Shimmery powder blue.

Skate til Midnight
Kind of disappointing. Its not as pigmented as it appears in the bottle, so I had to roll it on several times to get a good colour payoff. Its still a lot lighter than what I wanted though.

These come in 2.5g sizes, the same amount as with the MAC pigment sets. They are discontinued but they can be found on eBay.

Many people complain about the roller ball applicator but I think it makes the product more accessible than MAC's pigment sets. I find the trick to getting enough product out of these is to tap the roller ball against the back of your hand first, before rolling on the colour. Tapping it first helps get more pigment onto the applicator.

If that still doesn't work for you then remove the roller ball applicator on top (lots of people prefer this method) and use a brush to apply.

Man, I wish I knew that brush technique back when I had a roller color.

Thanks for the swatches! Great haul!

Pretty! I've never tried pigments! I don't think I could deal with the mess haha. But the 2 purples and gold mode and melon are beautiful!

thanks for the swatches! I think I'm one of the few that doesn't own any MAC pigments - not even teal, even though I love it when everyone else creates looks with it!

Yay, swatches! Make a Move Mauve is quite pretty - I can understand why it was your first ^^

I wasn't partial to this year's vials, unfortunately. I was so excited for them, too! Oh, well. Maybe next year :(

Great tip for the rollerball eyeshadows, I wish I knew sooner!

And thank you very much for your input on Canadian schools...I might ask you some questions later on...I'm looking for good AND affordable schools still....what do people there think of St. Thomas University? Does it suck?

Is it just me or are those maybelline shadows more pigmented than the MAC pigments? I agree, those little pigment vials are so inconvenient for getting the actual product out. I always wondered what to do with those Reflects stuff, like are they glitter? But they seem more like a cross between eyeshadow and glitter? Do you apply it as an eyeshadow? So confused! But they are quite pretty though :)
