2009 IMATS haul!

Make Up For Ever:

Got these for 40% off - a matte blue eyeshadow and the HD primer. I had also wanted the 92 matte purple eyeshadow but they were sold out already at 10am in the morning! :(

Photobucket

Oh and I had listed the items I wanted in writing, and specified "green HD primer". But somehow, I was given the purple primer, and only discovered it when I got home :( Moral of the story: check your purchases before you leave. I want to write to the company to complain but I can't seem to find a customer service email or contact page on their website. Maybe I should complain to their twitter account?

I got me some OCC Lip Tars, CDN$10 each:

Crown Brushes:

-Italian badger blending brush
-Lash fan brush
-Double ended spoolie and angled brow/liner brush
-Double ended eyeshadow / crease brush
-Bent liner brush (1 extra for a friend)
-Plastic spatulas for my creams/masks that come in tubs

Yaby:

I debated long and hard before buying their palette (as Rasilla and Babybubblz will remember :D). I think what swayed me was the fact that this particular palette was sold online for $136 but at the show it was only $89.

Anyway I had actually wanted the Pearl Paints palette, but they were sold out (and this was only around 12-1pm on the first day!). However they told me it would cost almost the same ($1 more) to buy the palette and individual shadows separately, so thats what I did! Even better I got to take out a few colours that I didn't like as much and replace them with others. I'll also get to arrange it anyway I want from the start :)

Photobucket

My cute little palette waiting to be filled:

Auraline palette, $5

Photobucket

Got this mainly for the MUFE eyeshadow, since they are larger than MAC eyeshadows. The palette is magnetized and holds 5 MAC eyeshadow size pans and 3 MUFE size pans.

A view of the total haul:

I also got two China Glaze glitter polishes because Halifax kindly looked for them for me at her local Sally's! I couldn't find these colours so was very excited when she got them for me. Thank you so much! :D

Fortune Teller on the left - black with orange glitter
Cleopatra on the right - rich warm gold glitter

2009 IMATS Toronto

IMATS was last weekend in downtown Toronto. Originally I wasn't sure I wanted to go, as I was certain I would be bored out of my mind. However seeing other bloggers buy the tickets made me more enthuasistic about it as at least we could still meet up and be bored together :P

I went Saturday, and met up with Rasilla first thing. That girl was dedicated and arrived there before it opened at 8.30am! My original plan was to get there at 8.30am too but I took forever to get up and get ready...so I got there almost at 9.30. Not to mention I couldn't find the location at first other wise I would've arrived 10 minutes earlier at 9.20am. We also met up with Babybubblz and her mom later, and Halifax as well. It was sooo much fun finally meeting and chatting about everything! :D

First thing I did at IMATS was to wait in line for Make Up For Ever's 40% off products. Thankfully Rasilla was kind enough to wait in line with me, and also hold my spot while I snagged some OCC. While we were waiting she was watching the Temptu demonstration:

Photobucket

(Yep the line for MUFE went all the way past the Temptu booth next to them.)

Here's product selections at Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics (OCC):

Glitters

Pigments

Somehow in my brilliance I neglected to take a picture of the lip tars....even though those are probably the products that OCC are best known for.

Crown Brushes:

This was the most dangerous booth - the prices were so cheap and they sold so many things that it was hard not to stop everytime we walked by. They had all kinds of brushes, brush sets, brush rolls and belts, and the infamous 88 colour palettes. I definitely preferred buying from them over going through Coastal Scents (and paying their shipping prices!).

Yaby Cosmetics:

A Canadian brand based in Toronto, which seems to have gained a lot of popularity in the makeup industry.

There were a few body art models being painted around the show:

MUFE - The Butterfly
Photobucket

Royal Brush - The Amazonian Princess
Photobucket

Hers took the longest. I saw the artist start around 10am and he was still working at the time this picture was taken, around 2pm or so.

There were makeup classes too going on throughout the day. I missed most of them as I was too excited shopping and chatting with the others, but I did catch the one from MAC Senior Artist Melissa Gibson in the morning.

Photobucket

She used a lot of paint sticks (a pro product) on the face and a lot of blending to get the soft textures in this look:

Photobucket

Then she added some oomph with different coloured glitters. I found her technique of using glitters interesting. She said she wanted to go for a look where the glitters would be sitting on top of the skin so she had the model tip her head back while she sprinkled glitter off the brush onto the model's temples and cheekbones.

The end result:

There was also a student makeup competition with a gothic bride theme - these are the 2 contestants I really liked (that I managed to get pictures of).

Photobucket

The look on the right was the 1st prize winner:

Photobucket

I loved the creativity of the look on the left though, because the model had a speech bubble attached to her head:

Photobucket

Near the end of the day, I also caught the 2nd half of Youtube guru Enkore's presentation on Naked Cosmetics pigments. Pursebuzz was also onstage as his model:

Photobucket

They both look the same in real life as on camera, and have the same bubbly personalities! Koren had a few tips to share on using pigments too. He showed us how to make mineral mascara - by mixing black pigment with clear mascara, then applying with a lash fan brush.

I was a bit shy about approaching Elessa aka Pursebuzz but thankfully Halifax took care of that :D We each took pictures with her.

Photobucket

Elessa was super sweet and just as approachable in real life as on camera. She looked extremely busy at the show, but was still cheery and excited to talk to fans :)

Overall, the show was what I expected - smaller than the LA IMATS, but still some good stuff to be found. I didn't expect however for the products to sell out so quickly. I found that as the day went by more and more items were sold out and none of the companies were planning to bring new stock in for Sunday.

Lunch was also a big rip-off. There was only one counter selling food, which was cold salads and sandwiches. The selection was quite limited, and the prices jacked up. A basic caesar salad was $8 while a soggy wrap was $7. Even a bottle of Coke cost $3.50!

Anyway besides that setback IMATS was a lot of fun though. The shopping was good and the company was extremely fun, so I enjoyed myself thoroughly! :D

IMATS haul will be in my next post :)

Perricone MD giveaway winner!

There were 32 qualifying entries for the NV Perricone Advanced Eye Area Therapy giveaway which closed Wednesday night. I didn't feel like typing out all the names so I used the random sequence generator to generate a list in random order:

Congratulations to her, and thanks to all those who entered :)

something simple

Photobucket

T'estimo Layered Impact Eyes (discontinued)

Photobucket

Dusty pinks and purples with a subtle elegant sheen

Photobucket

One thing I always marvel at with Japanese cosmetics is how they manage to dress up your eyelids subtly but beautifully. Yesterday at IMATS, MAC Senior Makeup Artist Melissa Gibson said of the MAC MSF: "Its like pantyhose for your face." Thats what I think of when I look at Japanese palettes - their eyeshadows are like pantyhose for the eyes.

Photobucket

Photobucket

Also used Lise Watier pencil liner on the outer 1/2 lashline, a dupe of Urban Decay 24/7 liner in Ransom. Finished off with whatever mascara I had in rotation (This look was from summer!)

Giveaway: Ultra-Glam by Marcelle Cosmetics

I ordered a pair of EOS Adult circle lenses in Gray about 2 weeks ago, which still haven't arrived. Two weeks is rather long for a package from the US, so I'm desperately crossing my fingers that they are not lost and still on their way!

Anyway a reason I'm disappointed about the delay is because I wanted to use them in my replication of the Ultra-Glam look by Marcelle Cosmetics:

Gorgeous right? These are the products used for her look:

Photobucket

  • Liquid Liner in Very Black
  • Khol Liner in Black
  • Volume Precision in Black
  • Wet/Dry Eyeshadow Quad in Blue Moon
  • Concealer Palette
  • Vita-Lip Plumping Gloss in Nude

Here's an alternative look I've done with the shadows - its not quite as dramatic, slightly softer but very wearable, even for a day time look.

First I used the Wet/Dry Eyeshadow quad in Blue Moon:

  • Pale blue all over lid
  • Dark blue on outer V
  • Silver-grey on the centre of the lid
  • White to highlight browbone

Photobucket

  • Eyes were lined with the Liquid Liner Pen in Very Black on the top lid.
  • Bottom lid was lined on the outer 1/3 with the Khol Eyeliner in Black
  • Lashes were defined using Volume Precision mascara in Black
  • Undereye circles were concealed with the Concealer Palette

Photobucket

Finished off with my usual foundation, contour colour, and the Vita Lip Plumping Gloss in Nude.

To transform to a night look I would just add more dark blue to the outer corners, line my eyes more thickly and smudge the Khol Liner.

I must admit I've never tried Marcelle Cosmetics before but the quality of some of the products surprised me. I'll be doing separate reviews for each of these products in future posts!

Anyway, here's your chance to win the Marcelle products I used above! Simply:

1. Leave a comment below saying "Enter me!"
2. Also tell me if you have tried Marcelle Cosmetics before, and if so which products?
3. For an additional entry, post about this contest on your blog or twitter.

Contest closes Sunday, November 29, 2009. Open to Canadian residents only.

Winner will be picked via Random.org and announced in separate post.

Gold Ransom

Its been awhile since I used false lashes. These are Ardell Demi Pixies, which look a lot like the popular MAC #7 lashes

Photobucket

Featuring Shiseido Hydro-Powder cream shadows in Glistening Sand and Violet Visions as a base, and MAC Gold Mode pigment, Urban Decay Ransom eyeshadow on top. I also used a black liquid liner to hide the spine of the lashes.

Photobucket

Face was done using Lunasol Water Cream foundation, MAC Emote, Shu Uemura blush in Peach 47. Lipstick used was Shiseido Maquillage PK730.
